Gunung Nuang

Ez a legmagasabb csúcs it Selangor tartományban, 1493 méter magas.

Hazafelé jövet megálltunk a Kilátó pontnak (Lookout point) nevezett kilátó pontnál ebédelni. Itt a kollágák számára egzotikus (és emiatt kicsit túlárazott) nyugati konyhás étteremben ettünk (másfél liter jeges tea csúszott le a marhasültem mellé, pedig a túra közben is megittam több, mint három liter vizet...). Kiláttunk a kilátóról is a városra, illetve arra, ami a szmog miatt látszott belőle.
Egy-két kisebb túrával kellene előbb felkészülnöm, mielőtt visszamegyek a Nuangra. Márpedig vissza akarok menni, mert jövőre mindenképpen meg akarom próbálni a Mount Kinabalut Borneón.

I have a colleague, Sze Kai, who often goes hiking into the mountains. The last month I went with him and a few other colleagues to the Titiwangsa Mountains to climb the Nuang Mountain. It is the highest peak in Selangor state at 1493 meters. The starting point of the climb can be reached relatively quickly from the city, less than 23 km from our apartment.
I went hiking into the Irish mountains (Wicklow, the Mournes and MacGillycuddy Reeks) fairly regularly, so I have some experience. Well, it did no good here. In Ireland the air is fresh and oxygenated; here I breathed in almost only warm water vapor. But of course, what else can be expected in the jungle? Because it was a real jungle trek, not some paved path for Sunday tourists (for start, we went on Saturday). There was a beaten path, but since it rained last night (and here we are talking about tropical rain, not only some dust-beating shower), it was very muddy and slippery (the color of the mud and soil ranged from orange through ochre to brownish red, but not the very dark brown peaty soil observed in Ireland). Moreover, apart from a brief section in the beginning, the path rose up quite well.
Unfortunately, I sweat so much in general in Malaysia, but never in my life I have been sweating this much. The surface of my trousers was bright with sweat and the water was running down in tricklets.

Alas, we did not get to the top. On one hand, I was/am not quite fit (yet) for these tours, on the other hand I over-packed myself, I took too much and unnecessary with me. E.g. my heavy touring boots, which are good in the rocky mountains of Ireland, but here only pulled my legs down. We started a bit late too, but I cannot blame it for the lack of success. We got to approximately 1030 m (Sze Kai wanted to climb to the summit as he will soon go to some grueling trip, but had to give it up because of us). This is more than 800 meters walking upwards (in Wicklow Lugnaquilla is the highest peak, 925 meters and the trip start at around 400m), so I do not consider turning back at two thirds a failure.
Since the hill is covered with jungle, we would not have been able to see much of the surroundings (I was told that there is no opening or clearing in the woods), but anyhow we would not have probably seen anything because of the clouds that begin well below the summit.
Thankfully I haven't met any of the (dangerous) inhabitants of the jungle, although I heard many animals (e.g. monkeys) and Sze Kai Wed was bitten by a leech.
On way home we stopped at a lookout point called Lookout Point for lunch. Here we ate in a (for my colleagues exotic and thus a bit overpriced) Western-style restaurant (I have drunk one and half liter of ice tea with my beefsteak although I have taken more than three liters of water during the trek...). From the lookout we looked out to the city or rather to what could have been seen through the smog.

Today Sze Kai went again to Gunung Nuang (he trains seriously for the big climb), but I did not go with him. I could say that we have already had two family programs planned for today, but the truth is that I was not mentally prepared for 5 hours of panting and sweating. One or two small tours would be be necessary as preparation before I will be ready to go back to the Nuang. And I definitely want to go back because next year I want to try Mount Kinabalu in Borneo.

Kenyér / Bread

Újabb létfontosságú információ: Malájziában édes a kenyér!
Ráadásul a maláj boltvezető dél-francia kiskeredőnak akarja magát álcázni, félrecsapott beret-et is beleértve.

Another vital information: the bread is sweet in Malaysia! And mostly sliced, square toast bread. Besides, it gets mildewed quickly (green or black colors are typical). In brief, I don't like the taste (not even before the mildew). I will not write here what's Mariann's opinion about my opinion, but the "fastidious" is the mildest expression she used.
There is a Frech bakery here where one can buy bread-tasting bread, but obviously it is much smaller and more expensive. But get mildewed the same quick as the local bread. A refreshing exception is the baguette because it dries so hard in a few hours that even the mildew cannot eat it. In addition to this, the Malay shop keeper tries to disguise himself as a South French retailer, including the beret pushed to one side.

Heti Web 2.0 letudva.

I know that there would be more inportant thing to write about, but I am now very glad of two pairs of shoe, so this will be the topic now. I am happy not only because these are really fine shoes, but also because I thought that they cannot be bought here in Kuala Lumpur. And I also write about these because I have read today that Twittering was inveted by the ancient Romans: they wrote on the walls of the houses (yes, graffiti) even what they had in their in their laundry bag. I am not a big fan of the Web 2.0 stuff (if you have not realized this yet from the "frequency" of my blog posts), but if the Romans found it important to share with everyone what has happened to them, then I do the same.
To get to the point: I bought a Keen Newport H2 (top picture) because I already have a Newport (middle picture) and I am maximally satisfied with it. In this weather such a airy shoe is very comfortable to wear (e.g. the water can flow out of it in the tropical rain ;-) ).
Furthermore, I bought s Columbia Zugo Moc (bottom picture). A walked around in it in the shop a bit and it was very comfy. I have high hopes in it.
Weekly Web 2.0 accomplised.

Mármint a 13 éves Bárány Szilárd álmainak számítógépét.
De most!

(This post contains little or no meaningful information for non-IT people.)
Szilard Barany has bought the computer of his dreams. I mean, the computer of the 13 year old Szilard Barany's dreams.
I would like to buy old (but working) computers for long; the ones that I could not afford in their times. At home (in Hungary) I already have a lot of old parts (motherboards, CPUs, hard disks, etc., even an old Dell laptop: a Latitude from the second half of the '90s, with Windows 98), but these are all from the PC period, all too “new”.
Before last year (while I was waiting for the Malaysian work permit) I discovered a website that deals with old home computers. I contacted the owner, but somehow there was no time to buy anything. But now, when we were at home for the winter, I finally bought a Commodore 64. When I first encountered one (around 1985) it cost 300.000 Hungarian Forints, two or three times as much as the family's car, a Lada 1200s. My parent could not afford such an expensive thing, so I used the (Hungarian made) computers of the library and the school.
But now! For the price of two Big Mac meals I bought the computer and even a floppy disk drive could fit into the price. The computer is from 1984, so it's 26 years old, but fully functional. It could use a little cleaning, but that's pretty much all it needs. Correction: it needs something on which I can see the picture, because I could not connect it to the plazma TV; it has a dozen of connectors, but none of them usable. I already did a bit of research to find out what kind of cable I should fabricate, but it will be implemented only next winter.
The machine is (was) a performance monster: 8 bit CPU on 1 MHz, 64 KiB RAM (38 KiB usable for BASIC programming), hi-res graphics (320x200) with a lot of colours (16) and a still much respected sound generator. The capacity of the floppy disk was 177 KiB (the hard disk on my laptop has slightly more that 1.3 million times higher storage capacity). Any smartphone nowadays beats it easily; actually, mine has a C=64 emulator on it. Sic transit gloria mundi.
I have a really nice memory regarding this computer and floppy disk drive: I have invented the relational data model and the mornalization on them. All right Boyce and Codd has invented it a few decades earlier, but I wan not yet aware of them and of the relational database management. It happened during the mandatory military service, I had to develop a training-room management solution for the training center, but the 177 KiB was inadequate for this, so I introduced (used the words that I very well know by now) primary and foreign keys to reduce the amount of data in the files. Interesting how much I was unaware of the significance of my invention. Others got into the the industry's pantheon for this...
I have to admit that I cannot use this computer for many things now, but it is mostly because of the lack of free time. The “platform” itself is very well alive, there are still people developing for this or modding it, there are emulators and one can download old games and demos; actually not long time ago a version integrated into a joystick was released with adozen or so games in it.
I have driven Mariann into madness already with the old computer parts, but I still have plans. I would like to obtain the following computers: HT-1080Z, Primo, Sinclair Spectrum, Amiga 500, Commodore 128, Commodore +4, egy Apple a 80-as évekből, Compaq SystemPro, Silicon Graphics Iris Crimson, NeXT Cube and a VT220 terminal. A Dec VAX 6000 would not be bad either, but I would need to use the living room to store it.

Kis sziget a Dél-Kínai Tengeren / Small island on the South China Sea

We wanted to travel to Penang Island during the Chinese New Year, but somehow we did not organize this. Premonition? Possibly, it would have been wasted money because of the dengue. After I have been released from the hospital we decided to to travel to some place for a few days, partly because of the missed Penang trip, partly because I longed for the feeling of freedom after being locked in at the hospital (and at home) for so long. For my part it was a simple decision: Gem Island; and the family did not object. True, we have been here before twice (I have written about it earlier), and there are many other places in Malaysia where we have not yet been, but Gem is easy to reach, pretty nice and in this period of the year is almost deserted (not as if it could be really crowded any time). The weather was excellent (why are there no more guests this time? I do not understand, but I do not mind it, it was good that there was no more than 15 guests on the island), the service was high quality. We only did the usual things (snorkeling, sea kayak, splashing, sand castle) but no more was needed (and possible; other complain that there is no golf and tennis, but what can one expect when visiting a smaller-than-football field island?). I did only one non-typical thing: gathered rubbish. We went to the island during the lowest tide (full moon), during the mornings the water level was so low that the coral was on the the dry. Already on the first day's afternoon I have seen some pain buckets amongst the coral, this and other rubbish I picked up next morning with Albert's help. It was not too much, but the owner should not have allowed even this: he is risking his own future. Not to mention the sea life. The manager seeing our efforts has sent one of his men and free drinks. It was a disappointment to see teh rubbish in the water; the knowledge that I did a little for the environment filled me with satisfaction. Surely, the rubbish did not vanished becuase of this, but at least it will be at a dump, not in the water. Alas, the environment-awareness is not the strongest side of the Malays.
The underwater world was really beautiful again. Although we have not seen shark or sting ray this time, we have seen a lot of anemones and the clown fish living in them.
I made a sort video (see it below) that was not easy because on one hand the water always moves me (I did not want to step on the coral and anyhow it would not help), on the other hand nothing can be seen on the camera's screen dut to the reflection. But hopefully I could capture a bit of the sight. (Zoom it out by clicking on the four outwards arrows).

(It shows well how busy my days are in general the fact that this is the first time since I was discharged from the hospital when I can write on the blog or socialize electronically.)
At the end I was discharged from the hospital not on Tuesday but on Wednesday evening. The platelet count still did not reach 80.000 (was 75k), but on one hand I made it clear enough times during my stay in the hospital that I want to go home as soon as possible, on the other hand the platelet count increased strongly enough during the day to get okay by the evening.
My colleague Jaroslav and his wife wanted to visit me in the hospital but by the time they made it they could only assist in my getting home. I have spent seven nights in the hospital but felt eternity. And in addition I (and because of me the whole family) missed all the events of the Chinese New Year.
I have spent one more week at home and fortunately after this I had to work only a half day on Thursday because Friday was Prophet Mohammed's birthday, a public holiday.
Then of course, on Monday almost a thousand unread emails was awaiting and it seemed that the project did not progress a bit in my absence. For this reason alone I would hope I will never have dengue again.
