Malajziába költözésünk egyik nem titkolt szándéka volt, hogy utazgassunk a régióban. Mariann sokat kutatott és kérdezősködött, hova érdemes menni. Állandó taxisofőrünk, Mohamed ajánlotta a Kapas szigetet, ami elég jól hangzott, de amikor megnéztünk a szálláslehetőségeket, nem találtunk igazán jót. Amit találtunk, az meg már le volt foglalva. Viszont észrevettük, hogy Kapas-tól északra, pár száz méterre van egy kis sziget, Gem Island, rajta egy jobb színvonalú nyaralótelep. Itt szerencsére volt hely (sőt, mint kiderült, alig voltunk páran mivel jóval a szezon előtt voltunk).Egy Toyota Innova-t béreltünk, ami elég nagy volt hatunknak meg a csomagoknak. Ugyanakkor a két literes motorja sokat fogyasztott viszont nem húzott és elég szenvedő hangja volt 100km/h felett; a belső burkolatok pedig egyátalán nem voltak puhák, a jobb könyökemet szinte feltörte az ajtón levő könyöktámasz. A 440 km-es utat gond nélkül, 6 óra alatt tettük meg. Az út fele, Kuantan-ig jó állapotú (persze fizetős) autópálya, onnantól viszont sima főút; szerencsére nem volt nagy forgalom. Marang városka van a legközelebb a szigethez, innen egy gyors csónakkal keltünk át a szigetre (6km a parttól).
A sziget (mint a műholfelvételen és a fenti képen látható) kicsi, 15 perc alatt körbe lehetne járni, ha az északi oldala nem csupa szikla lenne. Állítólag apály idején végig lehet a sziklákon is mászni, de nem volt elég időm és megfelelő lábbelim, hogy kipróbáljam. A sziget magántulajdon, 15 éve épült rajta az egyetlen nyaraló telep. A méretből következik, hogy az étkezési és szórakozási lehetőségek korlátozottak, de ami volt, az nekünk tökéletesen jó volt. A nyaralási csomagban benn volt három étkezés naponta; az ennivalók finomak voltak, de erről inkább Mariann tudna érdemben mesélni. A programban volt snorkeling és tengeri kajakozás; mindkettő nagyon klassz volt. Átkeltünk Kapas szigetre kétszer is, motorcsónakkal és kajakkal. Kapas-on nagyon látszott, hogy még szezon előtt volt: bár sok nyaralóvendég volt, a felújítási/karbantartási munkálatok még nagyon az elején jártak. Ez igaz volt Gem-re is, az első két szobában alig lehetett zárni a megvetemedett ajtókat, át is kértük magunkat két másikba. Ott is volt gond az ajtóval de gyorsan kijavították. Egyébként igen jó volt szezon előtt menni: az időjárással semmi gond nem volt (legalábbis nekünk itt folyamatosan nyár van), és mivel kevés vendég volt, sok figyelmet kaptunk.
A sziget nagyon elbűvölő: fehér homokos strandok (kettő is van!), tenger fölé lógó pálmafák, víz felett lábon álló szobák, a vízben korallok, halak, rákok és tengeri izék; ahogy a trópusi nyaralást az ember képzeli. Ami nagyon tetszett még, hogy a valószínüleg vulkanikus származás miatt a sziklák és a közetek elképesztően néznek ki; le se tudom igazán írni őket, úgyhogy inkább itt egy kép izelítőnek:
Az északi-nyugati részen van egy öböl, aminek a partja teljesen be van borítva korall darabokkal, csiga és kagyló héjakkal, mindenből elég nagy darabok is voltak. Jó túristához méltóan haza is hoztunk egy jó adagot belőlük, de sajnos a legnagyobb korallt ott felejtettük a szobában.
Nagyszerű volt a három nap/két éjszaka, amit ott töltöttünk, mindenképpen vissza akarunk menni; talán úgy, hogy pár napot Kapas szigeten is töltünk, azért az mégis csak egy nagy hely, majdnem 2 km2.
Képek a szigetről és a nyaralásról
One of the unhidden purpose of our relocation to Malaysia was to travel all around the region. Mariann did a lot of research and asked around about places to go. Our permanent taxi driver, Mohamed, suggested Kapas Island that sounded very well but when we checked the accomodation options we did not find really good ones. What we found was already fully booked. But we noticed that there is a small island, Gem Island a few hundred meters north of Kapas, with a better quality resort on it. Fortunately, there was vacancy here (actually as it turned out, there were only a few of us there as it was well before the holiday season).We rented a Toyota Innova that was spacious enough for the six of us and the luggages. On the other hand, its 2 litre engine consumed a lot of petrol but lacked horsepower and was unhealthily noisy above 100 kmph. And the internal covers were anything but soft, my right elbow was almost blistered by the door's elbow support. We made the 440 km trip without any problems in 6 hours. The first half of the trip till Kuantan was on a well-maintained (of course, tolled) motorway, but after that it was just a main road; fortunately the trafic was light. The small city of Marang is the closest to the island, we crossed the 6 km of water from here by a speed boat.
The island (as you can see on the satellite picture and the top photo) is small, it could be walked around in 15 mins if the northern shore was not full rocks. They said that during low tide it is possible to scramble over the rocks, but I did not have time and proper footwear to try it. The island is private property, its only resort was built 15 years ago.
Because of its size the eating and entertainment options are limited, but all that was there was perfectly enough for us. The holiday package contained three meals per day; the food was good but it's really Mariann who could tell about it. The program contained snorkelling and sea kayaking; both were really great. We crossed over to Kapas island twice: by boat and by kayak. On Kapas it was obvious that it was before the season: although there were many guests, the renovation/maintenance works have just started. That was true for Gem too, in the first two room the warped doors were almost impossible to close, so we asked for two other rooms. There also was problem with the door, but they fixed it quickly. It was very good to be there before the season: there was nothing wrong with the weather (at least it's always summer for us) and since there were only a few guests, we got plenty of attention.
The island is really enchanting: white sand beaches (two of them!), palm trees overhanging the water, chalets standing above the water, in the water corals, fishes, crabs and sea whatevers; the way you imagine a tropical holiday. I really liked one thing: due to the probably volcanic origin of the island, the rock looks amazing; I cannot really describe it so rather see the picture below:
We climbed these rocks and I visited a bat cave at the eastern tip (I went alone this time as it was dangerous to scramble over the sharp cliffs). I also climbed to the top of the island (at least 15 meters, but could be even 17); I could not see much as the vegetation was very dense. I returned quickly because a rather big spider made me think if it was wise to walk in a rain forest in sandals and shorts...On the north westerly part of the island there is a bay, its shore is fully covered with pieces of corals, snail and shellfish shells; huge instances of all of them too. Being good tourists we brought home a good portion of them but unfortunately left the biggest coral in the room.
It was a great three days/two nigths that we spent there, we definitely want to return; maybe spending a few days on Kapas island too, 'coz that is a huge place, almost two sq.km.
