Tioman

A fiúk fáradtsága igen gyorsan elmúlt, amint visszaértünk a medencékhez; folytatódott a csúszdák kreatív használata.

As I wrote earlier, we booked a short break on Tioman Island; we have been there from this Wednesday till Saturday.
We traveled with the Berjaya Air's small turboprop airplane. We took off from Kuala Lumpur's old international airport, Subang and landed on Tioman's international airport. This latter is worth a few words. On one hand, although it is international, in fact there is only one non-domestic flight, from Singapore. On the other hand I have never seen such a small international airport: a single building, split to two (arrivals/departures), only offices have walls, every other places are open (only roof). Conveyor belt for the luggages and other modern inventions are non-existent (except one: the X-ray machine). Flight information on small backboard, with white chalk. Furthermore: for landing the plane has to take a 90 degree turn immediately before the runway because the airport is in a valley. And of course, there are houses immediately next to the airport, so the plane flies a few meters above them during the approach.
Assuming that the plane can approach the runway. Because we had to wait for it as the rain was so heavy that the runway was not visible (obviously there is no navigation equipment). We have been circling around the island for around half an hour till the rain subsided (the rain here comes and goes quickly and while it is here it does not tinker around: it is pouring).
We had issues with the accommodation at the start: the type of room that we booked was not really up to the expectation, but more importantly, it did not have sea view (although at the time of booking they swore that it will have). We tried to find other (more expensive) rooms at the coast, but all of them were already occupied. But we were given to rooms of higher category, if not on the coast but very close to the pools and the restaurant.
The weather improved a lot by the time we settled down, so we could go to splash. The boys like the pool a lot as it had two slides.
An addition to this they quickly get acquainted with an Australian little boy, Myles and the four of them practiced every possible improper usage of the slides till dinner time. In the meantime we et Myles' parents, Juliana and Brian from Perth. We had a great chat with them after dinner while the boys were playing Ben 10 on the stage of the restaurant.
Splashing next morning then sea bottom watching from glass bottom boat. This latter was not a complete success, Marian and her mom got sea sick pretty quickly and went ashore at half time, and the boys were so tired that they almost fell asleep by the end of it. At least I enjoyed it, made several dozen blurred but nicley colored photos through the glass. The boys tiredness quickly disappeared as soon as we returned to the pools; the creative usage of the slides continued.
The third day was perfect. With the Australian family we rented a boat (including captain) and traveled all around the island; it took around six hours. We have stopped once to walk up to a waterfall and splash in the pool at the foot of it (I had some concerns regarding the cleanness and safeness of the water as it was in the jungle, but nobody got sick and nobody met the unpleasant residents of the rain forest). We had a guide on this tour who has around 140 kilos, thus he was left behind fairly quickly on the way up, he even turned back although a little walk would not have hurt him. Then we had a lunch in a fishing port on the eastern coast of the island, then after we rounded the island at the top we stopped for snorkeling and fish feeding. Hundreds of small fish was swimming all around us and even picking bread from our hands. This was a great experience. Of course, have thoroughly studied the various corals as well, but the fish were more colorful and – obviously – more mobile. Then we went to a marine park where in a fenced (netted) bay there was more diving and fish feeding, but the fish here was even up to half a meter and they “bit” our hands stronger when they missed the bread. There were two floating platforms, we have been jumping and pushing each other into the water from those and from the jetty. The whole day was really successful.
On the last day there was a little of donkey riding, a little bike riding around the resort and beyond; we have seen varanuses (more precisely some kind of lizards of a meter or more length, but I could not identify them). And then a bit more splashing, just enough to almost miss the shuttle bus to the airport. The boys were very sad that we had to come home, although they did not even want to go there in the first place (poor children, they are bored of the holidays...).
