Gyógyulóban / Recovering

Tegnap óta gyógyuló félben vagyok: végre elkezdett emelkedni a trombocita szám a vérképemben.
Amint eléri a 80 ezret, hazaengednek.

I am on the recovery path since yesterday: finally, the platelet count started to increase in my blood test results. On the 4th day it already seemed that the drop of this count has stopped but unfortunately it was only a momentary pause before further decrease. But since yesterday the platelet count undoubtedly increases, quite strongly actually.
Healthy people have this number between 140K and 400K (I do not know what's the unit), mine dropped to 37K but by this morning it came up to 61K. When it reaches 80K I will be released. And this might happen this afternoon.
I am really looking forward returning home and really hope that for at least a further 30 years I will not have to go to hospital!

Megőrülök / I am going mad

This is only the third day in the hospital but I am already going mad because of the boredom and being enclosed. I haven't been in hospital for thirty years and have a rather active life, doing nothing and lying all the time just does not work for me. The TV is unwatchable, the computer is boring too (there is nothing interesting on the Internet :-) ); I tried to learn (for an Oracle exam) but the exam guide is crap (verbose but still lacks content and it is full of errors).
Mariann visits me every day, sometimes twice; this comforts me. I cannot entertain her, but at least we can chat a bit. Albert also was here once and David made me a "Get well" card. It also helped that I got well wishing from a number of colleagues (globalization and Internet: from Malaysia, India and Ireland). What's more, Weng Kett and his wife came in and they brought orange and grapes. In the last three it was only this orange that had any taste to me.
What bothers me more and more is the infusion. I get it to prevent dehydration. But also I drink a lot of fluids and the result of this two is that I have to go to the toilet every hour. Furthermore, I have to measure the result (which is quite significant every time). From this frequency and the total volume I concluded that I am not threatened by dehydration. Thus I will ask the doctor (firmly) at the next check up to take me off from infusion. It is really annoying to push/pull the stand with me everywhere and the pump's continuous creaking noise drives me nuts. It sounds like I was aboard a sailing ship in the middle of the sea stranded in calm; and I do not even have to wash the deck as everything is done for me.
Wish I could go home already. Even after the release I will for to rest for around two weeks. That won't be easy either, but much better than this.
I had to go to the toilet twice while I was writing this post. Duh.

Nemrég találtam egy cikket a híres sci-fi írótól, William Gibsontól Szingapúrról, aki nálam jóval tehetségesebben összefoglalta milyen is a város: Disneyland halálbüntetéssel.

Although we liked Singapore a lot, I somewhat felt that the things there are a bit over-controlled, over-regulated. Recently I have found an article from the famous sci-fi writer William Gibson who in a much more talented way than I summarized what's the like: Disneyland with death penalty. Be happy or we'll kill you.
The article was written 17 years ago, I think the city improved a lot since, but the article still carries some truth.

I took this picture recently in a DVD shop. I think they misjudged the movies' character.

Dengue

I always preferred spending longer time in far places and to live like the locals over being a checklist tourist (see this, this and this; go home). Well, I cannot complain now: I caught dengue just like the locals (and occasionally the checklist tourists :-) ).
I started to feel unwell on Tuesday evening (headache, some temperature, stomach), but did not suspect anything as I was not feeling that bad. But during the night I was: once I almost froze (in 30 degrees!) and was shaking like the tambourine (although not that loudly); and a bit later I was so hot that the sweat gathered into a puddle under me. I stayed at home the next day, but the situation did not improve, so in the afternoon I came into the hospital where they admitted me immediately. The sickness lasts a week, but I really hope that I will be released earlier.
One reason for this hope is that it is terribly boring to be sick. I was only lying whole day yesterday at home then in the hospital. In general I do not feel too bad (I still have some fever, but the headache and the lethargy are gone); I suffered more from numbing my whole body with too much lying. In addition, the pillow is so hard that my neck almost broke. I asked Mariann to bring the soft cushion.
I tried to watch TV, but I am not really a big fan of TV so I was just channel surfing but there was nothing interesting on. Well, there was one: on one channel Shrek 2 is running in infinite loop. This would not be a problem, but on one hand the picture and sound quality is so bad that a Polish VHS tape from the '80s that has been played 200 times would ridicule it; on the other hand the movie is interrupted around the middle and started from the beginning. And in the first five minutes you can see the shadows of people coming and going! I am in the Prince Court Medical Centre which is state-of-the-art, modern and nice (and unaffordable to the locals); the hospital is owned by the national oil company, Petronas. I do not understand how can they allow themselves to play a stolen movie; they could a new DVD for around 30 ringgits. Additionally, the government takes firm steps against pirated copies and then one of their institute uses them...
Mariann also brought in the laptop, so there is something to do now. I will try to write posts for the blog (I know, I already promised this many times.
But to return to the illness: they say that the hardest part starts on the 4th day, that will be tomorrow. The main risk is the drop of the platelet count in the blood: if it drops a lot then there is no coagulation but there is spontaneous bleeding. That sucks. And dehydration is also a problem but I have two defences against it: on one hand I drank so much water that I get sick simple by looking at the mineral water bottle; on the other hand I am connected to salty water infusion (I have to push the stand on which the bottle is hung to the loo and the shower as they do not want to disconnect me from the pump all the time).
So, we will see tomorrow how my state will change. If this whole sickness will not be too bad then I will consider it as part of the Malaysian experience. Of course, if it will be bad, it will be still a part of it, but I will recall it less frequently in my elder days.

Tetszett a város első látásra.
A második napon városnézés mellett döntöttünk.
Súlyos pénzbüntetés jár a rágógumi eldobásáért.

I booked few (6 :-) ) cheap flights back in May (Szitya called it a booking spree), so we were not bored in August and September. Our first destination abroad (i.e. outside Malaysia) was Singapore.
We took the 5pm flight (there are 6 or 8 flights every day). From KL to Singapore it is only 45 minutes, so that was a short and pleasant flight.
The first shock came when we took the taxi and saw the city: it was extremely clean. Not just after KL, but even after Europe. There was no rubbish on the streets at all, everything was new or renovated, and even the construction sites were carefully fenced and their surroundings cleaned. Everything is so nice, clean (no graffitis or peeling plaster), nice restaurants everywhere. We liked the city at first sight.
What was not a shock – because we were prepared for it – were the prices: everything is more expensive compared to Malaysia.
We stayed in a nice hotel called Albert Court Hotel (of course nice: Albert! :-) ). It was very much convenient for many ways: great location, friendly staff, lot kinds of food, comfortable rooms.
The first night we took a little walk to the biggest shopping road called Orchard Road. That was around 9pm, the boys were tired thus we could take just a short walk but even that was enough to notice few things. Firstly, the weather in Singapore is much more humid than in KL. Secondly, the people do not really going out to the streets. Just like KL, Singapore too have huge shopping malls next to each other, most of the time connected to each other somehow so the people don't need to leave the buildings. The malls' temperature is around 16 Celsius what is far too cold after the outside 36 Celsius. Thirdly, the buildings are very interesting; and exciting. So many style, colours, shapes and after sunset: lights. I guess they waste a lot of energy there but the lights on the buildings in some cases are amazing. Not just because they are colourful but because very creative as well; some buildings outer wall is practically an enormous display showing constantly changing patterns.
On the second day we decided to see the city. But before we could see anything, we needed cash but the debit card was not accepted by the ATMs. So, first of all we need to find a branch of our bank where we were told that we need to get the card authorized for abroad usage. This fortunately took a short time and we got cash. Time to spend it!
We started with a breakfast then visited a toy museum. Although it was not huge and of course it displayed the expectable things (dolls, cars, wooden toys), it had a few interesting and surprising exhibit too. One of these was an original, Hungarian made Interkozmosz battery operated tin car, like the one we had in our childhood. But also there were on display original Matchboxes (really in matchboxes) and a group of black dolls having the nowadays not so fashionable name of Little Niggers.
Next we went to see the harbour area where they have a huge Merlion (sea lion) monument in the harbour what is a water fountain. This Merlion is Singapore's symbol. We then took a boat trip on Singapore river which is not huge, but the river side was very much like Venice just not with the old ruinous buildings. On the boat there was no toilet and of course Paddy had to go... so we used an empty water bottle; he managed the whole procedure perfectly. Actually that was not the first time we used this solution :-)
After the trip we decided to see the Chinese and the Indian districts (we did not make plans for the holiday in advance, we decided almost everything on the spot). We were surprised because in contrast to KL there were no people on the streets, not even in Chinatown. OK, in the Indian district there were some but only around the temples. They have beautiful temples, very colourful, open and clean. Especially the Chinese ones; we have visited a really nice one. We had lunch in the Chinese district in a nice open little restaurant. Well, the toilet wasn't as nice as all the other things... (we didn't use it just saw it next to the washbasin).
After lunch we took the metro to Little India, it is extremely clean too (I mean the metro). There is serious fine for those who throw chewing gums away. Actually you can not buy it in Singapore at all; it is a very strict ban, you cannot even bring it into the country.
The Indian district was a bit untidy and messy but still far much better than the KL one. The strange thing was that in the shops – because of course in this district there are no shopping malls but a lot of small shops open to the street – the sales ladies were mostly Chinese. Don't know why...
When we walked to the Arabic district there was a car boot sale and we bought a tribal drum, which was old but exactly that type what I always wanted. One side the drumhead had a little hole but worked well and I loved it. (Three days later Paddy made a big hole in the other side :-( )
Arabic part of the city was clean too with nice temples and parks. Traditional Malay martial art classes were held in one open place so you could watch them if you wanted.
We didn't go to see the Singapore Eye (Ferris wheel) because we were so tired by the end of the day and actually we knew that we will see the city the next day from the cable car.
The whole picture from Singapore we had at the end of the day was very positive.
So the next day we decided to go over to a nice island called Santosa which is mentioned in every travel books as a place to go if you want to relax. Nice, quiet beaches, woods, a theme part thrown in. Well, that was not what we really expected. It's because the whole island is a fun park, where hotels, aquarium and dolphin show can be found and everything else that falls into the category of entertainment We though that we take the cable car to the island and there we find out what to do. Well, this was not the way to go. You can buy different combination tickets and the cable car station and take the ride only with these. So we picked one formula that seemed to be good and off we went. The cable car goes over a bay with harbours. There was a holiday ship just in the harbour what had a water slide combination on the top with a transparent part that hung out over the sea at the height of the 6th floor or so. Even to see it was bad – at least to me... :-). On the island we went to an aquarium, a 3D cinema where we plummeted off a waterfall, and a lug ride (a wheeled sledge) where the boys were sitting is a small racing car kind of thing and drove it down the hillside, then a chair lift brought them back to the start.
There was also a (pink) dolphin show and we have a seen or try a lot else interesting, but around 3pm we had to go leave because of the flight back.

Durva / Brutal

A kis részek miatt. Akkor mégiscsak lehet fésűje.

As I wrote earlier the swastika has a different meaning here than in Europe, so one can get used to its frequent appearance, can get mentally prepared to it. But what I have seen teh other day... Brutal.
In an otherwise grand toy shop I have seen the Adolf Hitler action figure (see picture).
Actually not the figure as the box was cling wrapped, but the box itself is shocking enough. Pity that I could not open it or peek into it because I was rather interested if its right hand could bend the elbow or frozen in Nazi salute? Can it be dressed? Is there anyone at all who wants to undress it? Does it have a comb like Barbie has and is it necessary to trim its mustache with miniature scissors?
But of course, I was most interested in that who buys this? There are not many (neo)Nazis here, the people around here was/are devoted to different kinds of crazyness. It is written on the box "War criminals or the 20th century" but I do not think it was manufactured for educational purposes. But then who buys this? And a multi-piece collection of it?
But I was glad to notice that it is not for children under 3 years. Due to small parts. So it must have a comb.
