Álom számítógép 2.0 / Dream computer 2.0

Szeretnék venni egy új számítópépet, és nem csak azért, mert szeretem a számítógépeket (főként az újakat), hanem mert öt embernek két számítógép egyszerűen nem elég. Még akkor sem, ha próbáljuk a gyerekek képernyő előtti idejét minimálisra korlátozni (a képernyőbe beleértve a TV-t, DVD-t, Nintendo DSi-t, mobiltelefont és a (játékokat is futtató) gyerek digitális kamerát is).
Még Malájziába költözésünk előtt vettünk az Dell Studio 15 laptopot, mert elvinni/elhozni valamelyik meglevő számítógépünket (a Dell XPS 600-at vagy a Dell OptiPlex 170L-t) többe került volna, mint újat venni (ráadásul az XPS 37 kg). Meg egy laptoppal nincs gond a vámnál, és ugye értelemszerűen ide-oda lehet vele menni.

Dell Studio 15
Egy ideig minden rendben volt, a Studio hozta az összes elvárható szolgáltatást és még többet is. Mindenkinek tetszett, webböngészés, Skype videótelefonálás, játékok, email. Túlságosan is népszerű lett. Vettünk hát itt a szokásos negyedéves számítógép-vásárban egy Dell Mini 10 netbook-ot, hogy levelezni, böngészni és Skype-olni tudjunk (akár az ágyból is). Illetve, hogy Mariannn tudjon. Ezért lett piros a kis gép. Ez a netbook is maximálisan megfelel az elvárásoknak (még HDMI kimenete is van), bár nekem túl kicsi a billentyűzete (persze, mit várhat az ember egy könyvecske méretű eszköztől?).
Csakhogy közben Mariann rákapott az ágyban történő DVD nézésre (az itteni 7 ringgites "eredeti" DVD-kről majd máskor írok), ezért szinte minden este nála van a nagyobbik gép, én meg most is körmölhetek a Mini-n (most éppen szabad, mert a fiúk már alszanak). Ráadásul, nem is tudtam Linux-ot rakni a Studio-ra, mert Vista van rajta és teljesen újra kellene particionálni a merevlemezt és újratelepíteni a Vista-t (meg az összes alkalmazást meg fényképet és videót), ennyit meg nem akarok vele foglalkozni.
Nincs más hátra, mint előre, venni kell egy új számítógépet!

Dell Zino HD
Talán feltűnt, hogy az összes eddig említett családi számítógép a Dell gyártmánya. Több, mint egy évtizede dolgozom Dell gépekkel, a netbook-tól a laptopon és asztali gépeken át a szerverekig és minden tekintetben meg vagyok velük elégedve. Egyszerűen nincs okom rá, hogy más gyártótól vegyek. Így aztán egyértelműen Dell a kiszemelt új hardver is: Dell Zino HD.
Kis, kompakt asztali gép, elég erővel ahhoz, amire nekem kellene: kis rekreációs programozgatás esténként. Hol vannak azok az idők már, amikor hajnalig Half Life-oztam... Öreg vagyok már hozzá, és már a munkaköröm is inkább irányító, mint alkotó jellegű, azért kell egy kis kódolási képesség karbantartás.

Acer T230H
Windows 7-tel jönne, de ezt egyből törölni szándékozom, hogy OpenSUSE 11.2-t tegyek fel elsődleges OS-ként. Aztán persze visszaraknám a Windows-t, hogy VM-en keresztül futtassam a Linux alól (6 GB memóriába beleférne). Oracle 11gR2, Java és Android SDK lennének a fő attrakciók. A hab a tortán egy Acer T230H multitouch monitor lenne (Android fejlesztéshez, többek között).
Itt mindezt meg lehetne venni 3000 ringgit alatt, ami kb. 210000 forint. Immár két évtizedes hardver-vásárlási tapasztalattal azt gondolom, hogy ez igen jutányos ár ennyi jóságért.
Már csak az a kérdés, hogy honnan lesz rá pénz. Ha az ember elveri utazgatásokra a pénzét, akkor nem lesz könnyű kigazdálkodni.

I would like to buy a new computer and not just because I like computers (especially the new ones), but because two computers for five people are simply not enough. Even if try to minimize the children's screen time (the screen including TV, DVD, Nintendo DSi, mobile phones and the kids' digital camera (that can run games)).
Before moving to Malaysia we have purchased a Dell Studio 15 laptop because to take/bring over one of the existing computers (the Dell XPS 600 or the Dell OptiPlex 170L) would have cost more than buying a new (plus the XPS weights 37 kgs). Furthermore, there is no problem with a laptop at the Customs and of course you take it here and there with you.

For a while everything was fine, the Studio has all the expected features and more. Everyone liked it, web browsing, Skype video calls, games, e-mail. Became too popular. So here at the usual quarterly computer fair we bought a Dell Mini 10 netbook so that we could email, browse and Skype (even in the bed). To be precise, so that Mariann could. Therefore it is little red machine. This netbook also fully satisfies all the requirements (it even has HDMI output as well), although the keyboard is too small for me (of course, what can you expect from a device with the size of small book?).

But Mariann fell into the habbit of watching DVDs in the bed (I will write about the local 7 ringgit "original" DVDs soon), so almost every night she has the bigger machine and I need to work on the Mini (it's free right now because the boys are asleep). In addition to this, I could not put Linux on the Studio since it has Vista installed and would be too much hassle to repartition the hard drive and reinstall Vista (and all the applications and photos and videos), I do not want to spend that much time on it.
There is no alternative left but to escape forward: I need a new computer!
Perhaps you noticed that all the family computers I mentioned earlier were manufactured by Dell. I am working for more than a decade on Dell machines, from netbooks through laptops and desktops to servers and I am satisfied with them in all respects. There is simply no reason for me to buy from another manufacturer. So obviously the new target hardware is also made by Dell: Dell Zino HD.
Small, compact desktop computer, with enough power for all what I need: little recreational programming in the evenings. Where are the times now when I played Half-Life until dawn... I'm too old for it and now my job is more managing than creating, so I need some coding skills maintenance.
It would come with Windows 7, but I intend to immediately delete it and install OpenSUSE 11.2 as primary OS. Then, of course, I would put Windows back running it via VM from under Linux (it all could fit into 6 GB of memory). Oracle 11gR2, Java and Android SDK would be the main attractions. The icing on the cake would be an Acer T230H multitouch monitor (for Android development, amongst others).
It all would be less than 3000 ringgits, which is approx. 750 euros. With two decades of experience in buying hardware, I think that it is fair a price for this much goodies.

The only question is how will I have the money for it. If we splash the money on holidays, it will not be easy.
